Typography
Sharon’s work in experimental typography explores giving shape and physical expression to letters and language.
Traces | Digital animation and projection
Investigating motion and typography, Traces is an animation of a text with the intent to illuminate through words and phrases the vestiges of life. The technique of layering is utilized to reveal and track the significant words and universal themes that reoccur in the text.
ABC-thru | Layered plexiglass
Exploring transparency and substance, ABC-thru is an investigation of letters fabricated with layered transparent material. Construction involves slight mutations of the silhouette at each layer, which allows ABC to be read from both sides of the form. Collectively, the morphing contour of the layers determines the overall shape of the physical object.
Melt | Water and dye | Distinctions: UCDA Award of Excellence, Archive Induction, Design Conference exhibition, Boston, MA; STA Annual Gala exhibition and publication; Chicago Design Archive Induction
Confronting the boundaries of letterforms and word shapes, combined with an interest in mutability, Melt is an investigation conducted with water, ink, and paper. Letters are formed in ice, melted on watercolor paper, and then translated for digital use.
Power | Type design exploration | Distinctions: STA Annual Gala exhibition and publication; Chicago Design Archive Induction; American Graphic Design Award and published in Graphic Design USA
Based on the international symbol for power on, the type is built entirely from two geometric forms and round stroke caps. Two letter heights and a shifting baseline were employed to add energy and distinction.
Mitchell | Gothic type
As an examination of the mechanics of classic typefaces, Mitchell is an alphabet drawn on the basis of Gothic precursors. It is characterized by wide widths and narrow strokes.
Retro | Pixel type
To investigate the very basics of type construction, Retro is a set of alphabets drawn using a pixel grid. The simplicity of pixel construction allowed for multiple trials and versions, and alternate characters. Retro has a bitmapped, low resolution appearance, echoing digital fonts of the 1980s.
Recombinant | Alphabet
An investigation in randomness and vernacular typography, Recombinant is an alphabet assembled from twenty-six different fonts.
Metamorphosis | Book
In this meta book, the design of a single spread continually evolves, constituting the story arc. The general theme of Franz Kafka’s short story, The Metamorphosis, not his verbatim text, is the inspiration for this investigation in visual story-making.
